For example, OptraWeb's domain name is optraweb.com.au. Let's take an example of a company called "Jeandale Solutions". They could choose to use an Internet domain name of jeandale.com.au.

As identified, there are different second and top level domains that you can use -- and their suitability and availability depend on the type of organisation you run. For example, an Australian company could register in com.au, whereas an Australian university would register in edu.au.

.com.au	A .com.au domain requires evidence of a registered business or company name for the requested domain. The domain name MUST be a direct derivation (or abbreviation) from the BRN or ACN. Please note it can not be a place name (i.e. goldcoast.net.au), or be a generic word (i.e. bank.net.au). The domain name can not be a trademark violation.
.net.au	A .net.au domain requires evidence of a registered business or company name for the requested domain. The domain name MUST be a direct derivation (or abbreviation) from the BRN or ACN. Please note it can not be a place name (i.e. goldcoast.net.au), or be a generic word (i.e. bank.net.au). The domain name can not be a trademark violation.
.asn.au	Primarily intended for associations of various kinds, i.e. mraqld.asn.au for the Motorcycle Riders Association of Queensland. OptraWeb will need an association number to register an .asn.au domain on your behalf.
.org.au	Non-Profit Organisations
.edu.au	For bodies that operate in the educational sector. Names should conform to the named entity, or a logical abbreviation, i.e. www.qut.edu.au for Queensland University of Technology.
.com, .net	There are no requirements for these domains, but they must not conflict with existing trademarks, or names.
Others	There are other specialist domain spaces, like .tv and others. Please contact our Sales Team for advice or information if you wish to use any domain not listed above.
